As a music producer, I try to make beats every day. Producers should aim to create new catalogues weekly to build up their portfolio. Aim for a solid number like 10 songs per catalogue. Of course, the more the better but make it a realistic goal. It’s hard to shop beats when you’re attached to each track you make, so having a full portfolio helps you and the artists you’re selling to. Setting up multiple catalogues, organized by date, vibes or tempo, allows you to skip around during listening sessions and increases your chances of selling a track or two. Some beats will always be better than others, but don’t throw away your “throw aways.” Organizing them into their own individual folder and offering them at super discounted rates can definitely make you a few sales with artists shopping on a budget. It’s always good to have a Dropbox folder or private Soundcloud playlist featuring your top beats to send privately through email.
